Set in a 1940s Australian orphanage, The New Boy is an engrossing study of culture and colonization and draws on the director’s own childhood experiences in a Catholic boarding school. After being found aimlessly wandering the Outback alone, an indigenous boy is sent to a remote orphanage run by Sister Eileen (Cate Blanchett), a nun who is harbouring a secret. The arrival of the boy (superbly played by Aswan Reid) and his mysterious abilities unsettle the community in this intriguing tale of spiritual worlds colliding.
